ta' lablab,
the santa verna caves
destroyed!

In May 2022, MALTA-ARCH reported construction upon a fragile cave system only a few meters away from the Santa Verna temple. An  October 2023 Archaeology report details a prehistoric burial with a line of seven skulls, some intentionally positioned inside other skulls. Near the skulls were disarticulated remains of several other human and animal bones, as well as pottery sherds.

The large caves were situated directly in front of a fresh water source (now destroyed), and arable land, that is still farmed, was on top and is still all around it. They are now needlessly destroyed to create 11 buildings.

In June 2022, the Planning Authority temporarily halted the construction, but after the Oct. 2023 Preliminary Archaeological Report of the overhead rock-cut tomb (not caves), development resumed. No further damage to the site should be permitted until a proper analysis of the soil, which contains important archaeological information,  occurs!
